12- Madison A: Sunscreen is Nasty. End of Story.

When I think of sunscreen, I think of the beach. And when I do that, I remember how much I hate it.

Sticky with a white cast, the texture of sunscreen is chalky and disgusting. It seemingly sticks to everything and nothing at the same time, never quite blending in with the natural color of your skin.

Even more so, it doesn’t even do the job it’s meant for! Although it claims to protect from sunburns, I always seemed to have one by the end of a day-long beach trip. Nearly 5 hours in the sun and multiple reapplications does no favors for the skin, with lobster red sunburns always coming home with me regardless.

I also find that I associate sunscreen with the beach. Driving home in uncomfortable soggy clothing, with the sunscreen pilling up on my arms. Sand everywhere. The feeling of absolute disgust. That is what I associate with the acidic smell of sunscreen.

Overall, I think I could do without sunscreen. And if push comes to shove, I’ll take a sunburn with open arms.

  1. Hi, Madison! I felt like I was the only person who didn't like the beach. It's beautiful and I don't mind it every once and a while, but I agree that the experience is uncomfortable with all the sunscreen and sand. Especially trying to not track the sand in the house/hotel! Here's a tip: I find that the beach is much more fun during cold weather, not only because there aren't as many people, but there isn't as big of a risk of sunburns and the sights are still beautiful. Good job! :)

  2. Madison, I relate to your frustration about sunscreen. It always has that chalky feeling on your skin which I never liked. Your association with sunscreen and the beach was interesting to read about too. Good job!
