Spiders
Spiders are some of the most polarizing creatures there are. We know most of them are harmless, and are in fact very beneficial, but oftentimes we're still creeped out and scared by them.
When I was in elementary school, I wasn't afraid of spiders outdoors. Sometimes we would see spiders, one time even a black widow at school, and it was pretty cool. I found them interesting, and had no fear of them whatsoever. However, seeing a spider in your house is a whole different story.
Spiders in my house triggered a sense of fear and danger in me. I once watched an episode of Hoarders where they had so many bugs in their home, sometimes spiders and roaches would crawl into their ears when they slept. I would be too scared to deal with them myself, so I usually asked my dad to take care of the spider, and he killed them.
As I got older, I started to be less scared of spiders. I'll still get a little jump scare when I see one in my house, but I started scooping them up and taking them outside.
A long time had passed since there had been a spider in my room. However, a few years ago, after a long period of me saving spider lives, I saw one near my bedframe when I got up in the morning. It was a very lanky brown spider, and had an unproportionally large butt thing that spiders have. My reflex caused me to immediately smash it with my hand before I could allow it to disappear into my room and one day my ear. I then went into the shower immediately to make sure any spiders or spider babies in my ear would be removed from it as soon as possible.
Although it made me feel safe at the moment, I regret killing that spider. It was probably really cool and just minding its own business and somehow ended up in my room. I'm sure it wouldn't have crawled into my ear in the middle of the night. Perhaps they had a family. Whatever the case, I should've spared that spider.
However, mosquitos will not get the same mercy from me. But that's for another day.

Honestly, I’m glad you didn’t spare that spider. That was a little harsh, but I hate spiders with a passion and I can’t comprehend how you can scoop them up, then let them live. I can’t even get near them without freaking out. It’s crazy how people can be afraid of something so little and of something that may not even be harmless to them. Regardless, thank you for sharing your insight Richard! Good job!
ReplyDeleteI liked your quick background of your previous experiences with spiders before the actual incident with the spider. I used to be scared of spiders, but I've grown to really not care about them a lot anymore. I still usually tend to not kill it with my bare hands. And mosquitos, don't get me started with mosquitos. Your ending line with mosquitos was a great way to end this.
