9 - Morgan W : Experiencing Passing Period

Everyone has experienced a passing period and I’m sure everyone has had their fair share of anxiety while walking to a class that's across campus from your last. The stairs are always crowded, cramming everyone together seemingly making it longer for your turn to merge into the traffic, especially if you are not alone but with a group. Generally speaking the left side is for people going down and the right side is for people going up, but that's not always the case. After school both sides are going down in hopes that you make it to the parking lot before the half an hour of traffic hits, and being late could cost you being to work on time. It can be quite frustrating to get through these crowded doors, hallways and stairs but we must in order to get to our next destination in just 5 minutes.  One time, after school, I was walking towards the office as many were walking towards the parking lot. A group of 5, coming down the right side had taken up the width of the staircase leaving little space for other people to pass by. I, of course, had to get up somehow and there were people behind me making it difficult to back up and move out of their way, so I tried my best to be as close to the railing as possible, to not break the group up. But unfortunately, they did not appreciate this effort to not break them up since they had to move closer together. As I was walking up they got frustrated that their flow of traffic was broken up, out of this frustration I got called an ‘effing b-word’ if you know what I mean. I know this wasn’t technically a passing period but it was an experience I realize is more common for others than I thought. Walking across the big campus is stressful enough especially with a time crunch and especially for this group of individuals.

  1. Morgan, you described the reality of the passing period well. I feel for your experience, as I’m sure everyone else does too. You really conveyed how walking across parts of campus can be stressful. Nice job.

  2. I relate to a lot of your points here. My schedule has me going all the way across campus for most passing periods. It also becomes stressful when I try to use the bathroom in between classes and it's crowded or the bathroom is closed for no reason. I'm sorry you had to experience that incident once after school. Great writing Morgan!

  3. I agree, passing period is really stressful. People will be rude to you for no reason, or slow down for no reason in the middle of a walkway! "Surely it can't be that hard to walk without blocking traffic," I always think to myself. You put it into words well, Morgan. Good job! :)
