5 - Kristina G: You Are A Flashlight

In the midst of a dark room or area, the light of a flashlight may illuminate what you were not able to see before. When the power goes out during a storm and there is no electricity, the first object you may grab is a flashlight. It casts a light along the way and dissipates the darkness.

In a way, we are all capable of being a flashlight. Not literally, but symbolically.

In the midst of negativity, you can choose to shine a light on the positives. In the Day of Happiness video from Link Crew’s Gratitude Week 2021, Ms. Ruiz herself said, “Happiness is a choice. You choose to be happy or you choose not to be”. Although, there are many things out of our control that can be the cause of our darkness. Grabbing a flashlight in the middle of a power outage isn't as easy when the idea is applied to our personal lives. These negative things can be absolutely dreadful and can attempt to bring us down. Luckily, you have the power to turn on the light switch and illuminate the good things, the happiness in your life. The darkness can attempt to overtake you, but it can’t. You are the light and you are stronger than the negativity the darkness holds.

Not only are you capable of being the flashlight of your life, you can also be the flashlight for others. Some people may be drowning in a darkness in which their light is struggling to be bright enough. With some assistance of your light and positivity, you can help uplift someone else.

A flashlight is simply a light source. Sometimes everyone just needs a little light to decimate the darkness that has a grasp on our lives. Although, the strongest light source in your life is yourself. You control your emotions and your actions. There are many things out of your control, but one thing you CAN control is whether or not you want to focus on the positivity in your life. If you notice yourself becoming surrounded by the darkness, remember that you are a flashlight. Shine bright. Shine the light on what makes you happy.

  1. Hi, Kristina! I liked the metaphor on this post. :) I do think that some people might find it harder than others to be a "flashlight" because of mental health issues or events out of their control, but I think at its core this is a good message. It reminds me of when Dumbledore says, "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

  2. Hi Kristina, I loved that you used Ms. Ruiz quotes about happiness and how you chose to be happy. I liked that you talked about being the light in a negative situation and how you should always strive to be positive. Great Job!

  3. Kristina, I loved reading your blog. When you told me you wanted to use the day of happiness video to quote Ms. Ruiz, I was interested in what you were going to relate it to. I thought your interpretation of a flashlight was brilliant because we can control the light in our lives through positives that make us happy! Great job.
