3 - Kristina G: The Value That Lays Within a Handwritten Card

The Value That Lays Within A Handwritten Card

There is something so compelling about the idea of someone taking the time and effort to write a message, by hand, specifically for you. It is a shame that emails and text messages are more commonly used than letters and handwritten cards. As we live our lives, words can lose meaning as we see them around us everyday and by simply looking down at cell phones. Although, words are more worth treasuring when they are on a card encapsulating a loving message. Handwritten cards hold such value in this age of technology as it evokes feeling and meaning that a digital text message will never achieve.

When an email or a text message is easier to send, a handwritten card is more valuable. Compared to a digital note, so much more is being put into something that is handwritten. The process of writing a card or a letter takes more than just a few clicks. Your personal touch is irreplaceable when the ink of your pen touches the paper, when your hands fold over the card, and when you lick and close the envelope. Physically writing something for someone simply shows how much you care as you created something that can be time consuming and wasn’t mandatory. Handwritten cards eventually become a personal artifact and become a cherished memory when the recipient knows it was created with time, effort, and consideration.

Texts or emails aren’t usually kept close to the heart, yet today they are more used to communicate and to show affection rather than handwritten cards. These cards hold a connection between the sender and recipient that can’t be replicated by the delivery of a text. I have a boxful of letters, handwritten cards, and notes from family and friends that I cherish. These physical pieces of paper encapsulate the memories of that day, but as well as the meaningful messages specifically written for me. The ones that I value the most are from my loved ones that have passed, but I have these memorabilia that were once in their possession but given to me with words that came from their heart. That is something that is irreplaceable by a digital message. These handwritten cards are something you can look back on, read over and over, and it will still continue to express the emotions the writer wanted you to feel.

The rarity of a handwritten card is what makes it valuable in the modern age of technology. It is extremely important to keep in mind the value of a handwritten card. You can build and strengthen relationships with the power of your words and handwriting. The time and effort it takes to write a personal note will never compare to the typing of an email. The love and connections that lay within a handwritten card will never compare to a text message sent from a cell phone. Grab a piece of paper, let the pen hit the paper, and use your words to show someone your appreciation.

Word Count: 499

  1. Hi Kristina! I completely agree with your argument here. As somebody that has a drawer full of Christmas, birthday, and thank you cards, it means a lot to me to receive cards. They’re something so simple, but sometimes the simplist of things can be the most powerful if the right amount of effort is put into it. I’m somebody that enjoys spending my time writing my feelings in creative ways so I tend to write these long paragraphs in cards that don’t really feel special (in my opinion) unless they are delivered in a different manner than over text. Your argument is very thorough and makes amazing points. Love it.

  2. Hey Kristina, I have to agree that it's sad handwritten cards aren't as common anymore. However, the bright side you mentioned is that when someone does write you a handwritten card, it feels even more special because of how rare they are! This is completely true, and I also like to save all the handwritten cards I receive. The physical writing on a card is so much more impactful than the words we've gotten used to on screens.
