I am from 6:30 crisp autumn mornings
Waking up earlier every morning to have more time together before biking school and playing catch
I am from biking home on busy tight streets with my dad
Then later camping in calm quiet forests
I am from a city that doesn’t sleep
To the suburbs that never seem to fully wake
I am from the guest at Steve and Kate's summer camp who showed off his accordion and the piano lessons I attended for years after this day
Leading to the blinding lights on field while the cheers quiet down as measure one pierces the silence of the stadium. After the 40 hour week of practice, with added late nights of rehearsal
I am from putting energy not only into what you are striving for but for who you are as well, even if you don't quite know who that is yet.
From being scared to take a chance and knowing it was worth it because of the fear felt
I am from a show that tells a tedious story about how the smallest actions can make the biggest difference in how your life plays out.
I am from swimming all summer and every day after school to spending the entire week prior to the holidays preparing all the food
Picking out the pumpkins and making pie all by ourselves from scratch and even at one point accidentally kissing the turkey pan
I am from my gym teacher motivating me to be proud of myself but never be satisfied with the result
There is always room for improvement
I am from the loss of our house due to a fire in 2010
The mountains I faced while having those hard conversations with my grandmother
I am from knowing every song on my mp3 player, leading years later to the excitement I felt when I finally saw the acceptance list for the members of the pit orchestra
I am from being the photographer because I’m the only one short enough to stand in the front of my tall family
And bonfires with fireworks with them for every birthday my dad and I shared
A friend who’s family took me in with no hesitation and given me one of my own
Eating mac and cheese together at 3am, spending holidays, family vacations and more together
Wow Morgan, your poem is really impressive. I love how it's easy to pick up on your story, and how you described a lot of it with juxtaposition. Whether it be the 'tight streets' to the 'calm forest', or 'the city that doesn't sleep' to ' the suburbs that never seem to fully wake', it continues all throughout your poem and lets me learn about you in an interesting way. One thing that stands out is how you've experienced both sides of a lot of things, which I wish I could relate to. Awesome poem, great writing!
ReplyDeleteYour poem has a mix of personal and inspirational elements. Reading it, I come to find out that music really is your thing , and it helped me relate to it because I too have the same love for music (except playing the instruments part. I learned a lot about you in this poem! Nice blog and keep it up!
