10 - Richard Hsia: Teenage Tattoos

 Teenage Tattoos

Tattoos are a form of self-expression and art, which are two things that most teenagers emphasize and take pride in. Tattoos are a great way to permanently capture important people, things, or feelings and proudly wear it on yourself.

    Permanently.

While tattoos can be removed, it's an extra cost that you might not have the luxury of paying for. And, before you came to your senses about an awful tattoo you might've gotten, you might've put the wrong impression on people depending on it's placement, visibility, and more importantly, what it is. If you regret it and don't remove it for whatever reason, now you're stuck with it on your body.

Teenagers are notorious for making bad and impulsive decisions. Impulsive decisions aren't necessarily bad, but they often lead to regret of that choice. Having a parent decide whether or not you can get a tattoo as a minor helps filter out the risk for regret and a bad tattoo choice. If they're taking you to get the tattoo, then they're likely okay with it's placement and design. And if your parents are okay with it, there's a good chance it won't be of regret for any reason in the future.

Getting a tattoo without a parent's permission also leads to some risks. First, it won't be legal, meaning that whoever does it for you probably won't be a professional (including yourself). If you're going to get a tattoo, you'd want it professionally done to get the best results possible, right? If you're set on getting a tattoo, you might as well get it done by someone who can make it look as good as it can be, rather than taking a shortcut and risking an ugly or messed up tattoo. If your parents don't approve, you may as well wait until you're 18 to get a professional job. Tattoos not done by professionals also increase the risk for infections or diseases transferred through needles. In the case your parents don't allow you to get a tattoo, you may as well wait until you're 18 to get a professional job.

Parental approval should always be necessary when getting a tattoo as a minor. Their approval eliminates a lot of risks that come with getting a tattoo illegally, as well as not getting a tattoo you'll regret or hurt your chances of employment. Most of all, they (usually) know what's best for you.

  1. Hello, Richard! I like how you are sympathetic to both sides, the teenagers and parents. I don't want tattoos myself (and my mom made me swear never to get them, haha) so I shouldn't have too much of an opinion, but I liked how you considered safety and cost, as well as a teenager's feelings in a difficult situation as this. Good work. :)

  2. Richard, your argument about getting a tattoo with a parent’s permission was strong. The beginning of your blog grabbed my attention, and left an impact before you even got into your reasons. You explained how it can be a regrettable decision really well, just like the image. Nice job!

  3. Hi Richard, I completely agree with you. Teenagers make really dumb decisions sometimes. Something permanent such as a tattoo definitely needs some considering and parental approval. I personally want a tattoo when I am an adult and even if I don’t need approval by then, I’m probably still going to ask them for their opinions. Overall, good job!!
