To have perspective is to have a point of view, and although perspective can also be applied to depth in things like art or video games, it's all about the view. Perspective is what is made of a situation, not necessarily what happened. In life there are many stories told from only one point of view, “winners write history”. The concept of winners writing history is a very prominent onem especially since there aren’t as many losers to tell their side of history and how a war may have been viewed from a different point of view. Perspective can also be affected by your own personal events or knowledge that may have been similar to an event you're grasping an opinion on, biases can heavily influence perspective and how others may perceive a story you’re telling. Of course there is also the concept of rose colored glasses that can make any story seem good no matter the red flags, through those rose colored glasses they just seem normal. Having a more optimistic outlook on life can also change how you view everything around you, waking up at 4:30am and not being able to fall back asleep may seem like a curse since that's way too early for a lot of people to be awake but another person whose power may have went out that night and reset their alarm clock could consider that a blessing since they didn't realize their 5:00am alarm was no longer in tact. The way you view the world, the way you react to certain events close to you and possibly across the globe is all about how you perceive the world around you and how everything from your past happened to play out, like getting that new job that requires you to be in the office by 6:30 or being rejected only to find a better job for you that starts at 9:00am. Creating how you see the world and life as an entirety and forming you into who you are, the actions you take, and of course the person you become, even with simple things like the classic rabbit or duck optical illusion. Many who favor rabbits as their childhood house will see a rabbit, but there are also the people who may have grown up hunting, or feeding the ducks in their local pond with a special person in their life who will see a duck, it all depends on how you perceive the drawing and your own personal views of it and the options presented.
Hi Morgan, you introduced me to some really eye-opening concepts here. 'Winners write history' is a phrase I haven't heard before, but it instantly made sense to me. I agree that your perspective throughout your day and life as a whole can really influence a lot of decisions you make. Personally, I see a duck when I look at the drawing, but I recognize the rabbit too. Great writing!

ReplyDeleteYour piece on perspective is such an advising read. I feel like you hit every point you could about perspective. Everyone’s world is so different according to their own perspective. It’s shaped by how they are raised, their personality and some nature vs nurture. And those pictures where different people see something first vs others like the rabbit of the duck is almost just as evidence for perspectives. Great work!
