The ice cream scooper is a convenient gadget that most people use often throughout their lives whenever they want to serve themselves some ice cream. The version of modern ice cream we know today is said to have been invented during the 17th century. However, the ice cream scooper was invented over 200 years later. This means that for almost 300 years, people had to serve ice cream without a scoop.
Have you ever tried to scoop ice cream without a scooper? If you've ever tried it with just a regular spoon, you know all the problems that come with it. Sometimes, the ice cream is too solid and you can't separate the ice cream, and if you somehow manage to, you have to repeat this a thousand times because of how little ice cream you can scoop with a small spoon. It feels like you're just hacking at a tub of ice cream and achieving nothing.
The ice cream scoop solves these problems in order to make ice cream scooping a convenient and stress free experience. Alfred L. Cralle finally invented the scoop in 1897 to put an end to the hassle that ice cream stores went through by using spoons and ladles. A simple invention, essentially a larger, deeper spoon which can get a good amount of ice cream quickly and make an sleek appearance with a well-rounded scoop.
This seemingly simple tool is the absolute pinnacle of human problem solving skills. Society is faced with an inconvenience, and Cralle created an invention in response to it. This simple tool is much more beneficial than it gets credit for. Some people's entire jobs are to scoop ice cream at a store. There are factories and companies which produce and sell ice cream scoopers and profit from it.
Cralle's invention has contributed much more than one would think to the world. 291 million Americans consumed ice cream in 2020. This means 87% of our population ate ice cream at least once in a single year. In turn, this means that 87% of Americans have probably benefited from the existence of the ice cream scooper.
The ice cream scooper is truly one of the most underrated inventions of all time.

Richard, I thought your blog was very informative. You had a lot to say about an ice cream scoop being underrated, and I agree with you. I loved your second paragraph because you described an accurate experience that everyone has been through. The facts at the end were impactful too. Good job.
ReplyDeleteYou’re right, the ice cream scooper is so underrated. There’s been so many times where I’ve tried to scoop ice cream with an average spoon and it simply bent to a 90 degree angle. Aggravating. As ice cream is one of my favorite foods, I have greatly benefited from the ice cream scooper. It’s quick, easy, and simple to use, there’s nothing else you could ask for. Thank you Alfred L. Cralle. Thank you Richard for your insight. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis blog was so interesting to read! I personally have never owned an ice cream scooper but I can definitely relate to just hacking at a frozen tub of ice cream with a normal serving spoon. I liked the part where you researched how many people had eaten ice cream in 2020. That was cool. Overall, your blog makes me want to go buy an ice cream scooper and be part of the rest of the world in thanking Cralle for their amazing invention. Great Job!
