13 - Kristina G: A Girls Day

A Girls Day

It’s easy to get lost in the stresses of attending school, playing a sport, working a job, and simply living as an average teenager. We get caught up in the assignments due at 11:59 pm and forget that we deserve a life outside of our tedious responsibilities. We get stuck in a loop of doing these activities that life starts to feel repetitive and monotonous.

In the midst of one of the hardest weeks of our lives, my best friends and I decided that we needed to have a girls day. Plans were created just a few days before the glorious weekend approached. Plans that were created because we needed something to distract ourselves from our mundane lives. Although, we specifically needed this day because our uneventful lives were interrupted by the adversities of a teenager. The combination of heartbreak and the pressure of junior year during the week caused a destruction in our mental states. It was clear we needed to focus on ourselves for even just a day and we did just that.

Fortunately, that Saturday afternoon we were done waiting. All of us, getting picked up in my friend's Nissan Altima to experience the day of our lives. We started off the day with a hobby; shopping. Going into Victoria’s Secret, buying what we needed to stay in touch with our femininity. Putting on what makes us feel good and purchasing it even if it was beyond our budget. Afterwards, heading over to get Chick-Fil-A to cease our hunger and have the energy that the rest of the day will require.

Having a support system in your life is genuinely one of the most important things to have. People that will have your back in the midst of your suffering. Sitting in a hot tub with these 3 girls helped me realize this. Being able to talk about the feelings you have been bottling up inside for weeks or even just being able to laugh until your chest hurts.

Although, my favorite part about this day was the last drive we had that night. The windows rolled down, wind flowing through our hair, and music blasting from the car’s speakers. Exhilarating and the peak of a teenage experience. Singing along to songs that empowered us, made us feel connected, and made us feel heard. Not a care in the world and living in the moment we were in.

Simply put, the stresses of our lives needed to be put aside and this was a girls day that was long overdue.
